Patrick Singleton acquitted himself admirably at the XX WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
with a 19th place finish in the Skeleton Event
on Friday, February 27th. He made two runs on the treacherous track at
Cesana Pariol where speeds can reach 85 miles an hour, and where there had
been a number of crashes involving hospitalisations during the Luge event
earlier in the week. The same track was closed last year after a
number of prospective Olympic hopefuls met with accidents during training.
Patrick admitted that the course was challenging and fast. He made the
difficult decision during snowy weather to change to snow runners on his
sled, a decision that was to prove somewhat costly when the weather improved
and further changes were not permitted. A pelvic injury added to Patrick's
woes, however he placed 22nd in the first run and 18th in the second,
leaving him in 19th place overall. In his own words Patrick said "19th
in the world isn't bad!", a sentiment that is no doubt echoed by his many
fans in Bermuda and around the world.
Patrick carried the flag for Bermuda in both Opening and
Closing Ceremonies. Also
representing Bermuda's Team was Chef de Mission Carol Bromby, Manager Derek
Singleton and Coach Markus Kottman.
