WORLD PROGRAMMES

PROMOTION OF OLYMPIC VALUES PROGRAMMES

The following is a BRIEF description of programmes on offer by Olympic Solidarity.  For further information and application forms National Federations should contact the BOA Office.

The Olympic Movement is constantly expanding throughout the world, and is an extraordinary factor in development.  It represents today a major world phenomenon, in the development and promotion of sport on every level, as well as in sectors related to education, individual rights, cultural diversity, improvement of society in general and sustainable development.

One of the missions of the NOCs is to develop and promote the Olympic ideals in their respective countries.  In reference to the Olympic Charter: Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and the respect for the universal fundamental ethical principles.

The priorities, at national level, are often in favour of the athletes or of the development of coaches and consequently, the NOCs do not always have the possibilities or the means of organising activities in other fields.

The seven programmes at the disposal of the NOCs within the framework of the promotion of the Olympic values, bring an important complement therefore making it possible for the NOCs to carry out actions related to the values conveyed by the fundamental principles of the Olympic ideal, according to their need, their individual situation and their culture.

SPORTS MEDICINE
Objectives: To develop and diffuse scientific knowledge and techniques in sports medicine.

Description
This programme will be similar to the 2001-2004 programme and will include an additional activity, Individual Educational Scholarships Programme.  The following areas of activities have been defined with the IOC Medical Commission:
Sports Medicine Courses:
They are conducted under the auspices of the IOC Medical Commission and are intended to educate doctors, physiotherapists, trainers and coaches with practical and clinical scientific training in sport medicine.
Individual Educational Scholarships Programme:
They are conducted under the auspices of the IOC Medical and Scientific Department and are intended to offer a financial contribution to recently qualified doctors and/or physiotherapists to follow an individual educational programme offering a practical and clinical scientific specialisation in Sport Medicine that they will then exercise for the benefit of the national sports community.
Publications:
Olympic Solidarity will cover the costs of the purchase and distribution of each new edition of the IOC Medical Commission publications, which are distributed to the National Olympic Committees (Encyclopaedias and Handbooks) in addition to the annual subscription of the Sportsmed publication diffused via the NOC Extranet.
