HIGHLIGHTS OF BERMUDA TEAM COMPETITION TYLER SENSATIONAL AS HE FINISHES SECONDS AWAY FROM A MEDAL
26 seconds from third place, 22 year old Tyler Butterfield, in his first major race since moving from the sport of Triathlon, rode a sensational race to complete The Commonwealth Games' Cycling Road Race in a field of just 35 out of a total starting field of 125. The France based Vendee-U rider, in a pack of ten just behind the first three finishers was quoted by his French trainer as a potential world class athlete.
FLORA DUFFY (above), described by expert analysts as the 'name of the future' sensationally astounded everyone by completing the Triathlon event at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 8th place. The 18 year old took four and a half minutes off her personal best, to finish in 2:35.13. Her English coach called her performance one of the most spectacular he had ever witnessed. He described her as being amongst the best in the world, beating former world champion Leanda Cave (13th) and 10th world ranked triathlete Felicity Abram. Only one place ahead of her was 6th world ranked Andrea Whitcombe. results
KIERA SWIMS HER WAY TO THE FINALS
KIERA AITKEN (above), qualified for the finals of the Commonwealth Games Women's 50 meter backstroke, a first for any Bermudian swimmer. Completing in 7th place out of a start total number of 27 swimmers, she completed in 30.00, just short of her personal best the day before of 29.99, and set a new national record. She also qualified for the semi final of the 100m backstroke. results
GYMNASTS MAKE HISTORY
13 year old CAITLIN MELLO (above left) second youngest member of all the Commonwealth Games gymnastics competitors and her team mate KAISEY GRIFFITH (above right and below), who was called upon to compete at the last minute (being 3rd reserve) due to pullouts and injury, made history by becoming the Island's first ever gymnasts to qualify for an All-Around final results
ASHLEY MAKES THE FINALS IN RECORD TIME
ASHLEY COUPER (pictured) gave Bermuda yet another thrill with her qualification for the final of the 1500 meters, and went on to complete the race with a new Bermuda National Record in a blistering time of 4:10:48, taking seven seconds off her previous best, to finish in 9th place out of an elite field of 12 of the worlds leading middle distance runners.. results
